Struggling with Addiction? Therapy That Actually Works

Whether it's alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn, or a combination—willpower alone won't fix it. Therapy addresses what's underneath the pattern.

I'm a fully qualified psychotherapist and BACP-registered counsellor with specialist training in addiction. I've worked with 50+ men who thought they'd never break the cycle. They did.

Fully confidential. No judgment.

You may have tried stopping. You may have promised yourself—or your partner—that this would be the last time.

Yet the pattern keeps returning.

Whether you're struggling with alcohol, drugs, gambling, compulsive pornography use, or a mix—I've seen the same cycle play out differently for different people. And I know why willpower alone doesn't work.

WHAT WE EXPLORE

Addiction becomes compulsive for many different reasons. Therapy helps you understand what keeps the pattern going—not just stopping the behaviour.

  • Why the behaviour feels compulsive
  • Triggers and patterns of use
  • Shame and secrecy
  • Anxiety, stress, difficult emotions
  • Emotional avoidance
  • Impact on relationships and intimacy
  • Why you continue despite wanting to stop
  • Developing healthier ways of coping

Why Addiction Isn't About The Substance—And How Therapy Actually Breaks The Cycle

THE REAL PROBLEM ISN'T THE BEHAVIOUR

Everyone thinks addiction is about the thing itself.

You drink too much. You can't stop. You promise yourself you won't again, and then you find yourself back there. So you call yourself addicted.

But sometimes that doesn't go far enough.

Because the alcohol, drugs, gambling, or pornography may not be the real problem. It may be the behaviour you've learned to use when something underneath feels impossible to tolerate.

It might be rejection. Loneliness. Shame. Anxiety. Stress. Feeling unwanted. Feeling like you're not good enough. Difficulty with intimacy. A need to escape from yourself.

And over time, this behaviour becomes woven into your identity. You start thinking:

"What's wrong with me?"
"Why can't I control myself?"
"Maybe this is just who I am."
"I'll never change."

That shame becomes part of the cycle itself. You feel bad about what you've done. You want to escape how you feel. And the behaviour becomes an easy place to go back to.

"JUST STOP" DOESN'T WORK

It isn't as simple as willpower.

If you've been struggling with this for months or years, telling yourself to "just stop" doesn't address what keeps pulling you back.

There may be an old pattern underneath. Something from earlier in your life. Something that became a way of dealing with feelings, relationships, rejection, loneliness, or uncertainty.

That doesn't mean there's one hidden cause waiting to be discovered. It means the behaviour deserves to be understood.

The real questions are:

  • What happens before you engage in this?
  • What are you feeling?
  • What are you trying not to feel?
  • What does this behaviour give you in that moment?
  • What happens afterwards?
  • And perhaps most importantly: what does this say to you about yourself?

These aren't questions answered in one session. Real therapeutic work takes time. It's about understanding the whole person—not reducing someone to a label.

YOU ARE MORE THAN THIS BEHAVIOUR

You don't have to spend the rest of your life thinking of yourself as "an addict."

The behaviour may be out of control right now. It may be affecting your relationships, confidence, work, or sense of self. But that doesn't mean it defines you.

Therapy creates space to slow everything down and understand what's happening beneath the surface.

Not just: "How do I stop?"

But:

  • "Why has this become so important to me?"
  • "What am I trying to cope with?"
  • "Where did this pattern come from?"
  • "Who could I become if I understood myself differently?"

HOW I WORK

I use an integrative approach combining psychotherapy, CBT, and evidence-based techniques to help you understand the root of the pattern and develop real, lasting change.
